Nintendo Delivers Plenty

Nintendo took a non-traditional route this year. Clearly behind in the console war, yet still vehemently defending the Wii U as a great piece of hardware, Nintendo opted out of a live conference in favor for a web conference. Unsurprisingly for Nintendo, it was an odd conference. Interspersed throughout with scenes of Nintendo characters animated by the makers of Robot Chicken, Nintendo did have some fun things to unveil.

Super Smash Brothers Wii U

This section started with a stylized dual, a la Smash Brothers, between President of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aime and Nintendo President Iwata. After a few spectacular moments, the movements transitioned into the Smash Brothers universe and they were replaced by their Miis, officially announcing the ability to use Miis in the game. You will be able to customize your fighting style with 3 main types (Brawler, Sword fighter and gunner) and further with 1 of 4 specials for each class, giving a total of 12 fighting style options for your Miis. The game has some other new things added to it, including compatibility with their new accessory the Amiibo, which I will discuss below. Also revealed was that the 3DS is getting a version of the brawler as well. Should be good! Look out for this one Winter 2014.

Amiibo

Amiibo is Nintendo’s answer to the likes of Skylander and Disney Infinity. They will be selling many figurines in the image of their famous characters, and will be adding support of these toys into multiple upcoming games. So far the only one that will have it in for sure is Super Smash Brothers, but they promise to reveal details of bringing it to Mario Kart 8 as well. The toys release alongside Smash Brothers this holiday.

Yoshi’s Wooly World

The sequel to the highly successful Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Nintendo brings us Yoshi’s Wooly World. Also stylized in a world made of wool, the game looks just as charming and fun as Kirby’s was. The game will have no time limit and reward exploration of the levels. This game will be available next year, no solid date yet.

Zelda Wii U

And there we have it, my reason to buy a Wii U. I bought the Wii for Twilight Princess, and the gamecube for Wind Waker, and now I will buy the Wii U for this upcoming Zelda game. The world is cel shaded, a style that doesn’t usually have me sold, but I can’t deny it works, and it is gorgeous. The art style is bold, and it all flows together beautifully. Their biggest promise with this game is the world will not be segmented or linear in any way. The world will be open to explore, serene (save when the big baddies tear it up), and massive. The short clip they showed details a transition between a grassy field and a forest as a fight begins, and I caught myself drooling a bit. The buzz around the web is that the character shown doesn’t appear to be link, and I can’t disagree, there are definitely differences. It could be Sheik, Princess Zelda’s alter ego from Ocarina… but only time will tell. Again, this game will be out 2015.

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby

Two classic Pokemon games are getting massive makeovers with these titles.

Bayonetta 2

I never played the first Bayonetta, but it got great reviews. As such, I don’t have much of an opinion here. The fighting takes place in hell, and the art style works for the game…

Hyrule Warriors

Dynasty Warrior games are kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. I enjoy them far more than I probably should...but getting to run through hordes of minion characters executing massive moves that knocks dozens out at a time…it’s fun. Now Nintendo is bringing me this style game in the world of Hyrule. If I wasn’t sold on a Wii U before, I am now. In addition to the minions to kill, Hyrule Warriors will stay true to the Zelda games and provide plenty of giant bosses to kill. The multiplayer will utilize the Gamepad, allowing one player to watch the TV while the other plays on the tablet…which seems a bit unfair, but more aesthetically pleasing than split-screen to be sure.

Mario Maker

One of the most exciting titles announced is a non-traditional…and yet as traditional as it can get…Mario. In this game, you get to create the levels a la the original Mario Brothers. You will have all the tools you need to create a classic 2d side scrolling Mario Game. It looks fun, and I feel very evil levels will exist in no time.

Splatoon

This last title had me almost as intrigued as the new Zelda. Splatoon is a 4 v 4 shooter game…with a twist. You play as a sort of human/squid hybrid. Your gun shoots ink, and your primary goal is to end the match having inked more of the level than the opposing team. In human form, you can ink the world and enemies (killing them), including over your enemies already existing ink. In squid form, you can swim through the ink, diving under the surface to wait in ambush or leaping across great distances, or up inked walls. It looks very intriguing, and if the gameplay is as smooth as the demo, I feel I could lose many hours to it.

Wrap-Up

Even when not there in person, Nintendo managed to put out some great announcements and get their fans excited. Hell, at the very least they have successfully sold a system to me.
Today was the last day of E3, I will spend the next few days pouring over all that has come of it, and get a few more opinions out before returning to a calmer pace next week.

Games...Games...and more games

Falling ever behind this week…guess that’s what happens when you work full time, have a fiancé, try to game AND run a gaming blog. I’ll get the hang of this, I swear! Sony’s conference. Last year, they blew me, and many others away, with their PS4 announcement, game reveals, and overall presentation. I went into this one optimistic, but keeping my expectations low, knowing it’s next to impossible to have a repeat of last year’s highs. I was definitely not disappointed, they put on a solid display, showed some amazing progress on games that aren’t quite out yet and gave us a great taste of new titles to come. I’m going to hit a bunch of the titles that excite me here, and mention a few more at the end if you want to see more. I’ll keep my comments on each short, Sony had a lot to put forward this year.

Destiny

This is the game that is making me die for a next gen system, has been since the announcement trailers last year. The nice part? Sony is making it easier for me by releasing a special edition white PS4 bundled with Destiny…now to just find the money to buy said bundle. Any donations? No? Ok, had to ask… In addition to the special PS4, Sony fans will also get a taste of the game first, with beta coming to the Playstation 4 first on July 17.
And pre-order here to get into beta ASAP! Game ships September 9.

The Order: 1886

Another title from Sony I look forward to, helping lean me in the PS4 direction before the XBone direction. Best I can tell, it’s a steampunk werewolf hunting game. I’d say more, but that really seems to sum it up. It just got pushed to early next year, but I’m one who would rather a game get pushed and perfected than released as crap.

Infamous: Second Son

This one has actually taunted me since its launch. The series is not groundbreaking or absolute 10/10 games, but they are thoroughly enjoyable action, open city games. Looks like they are releasing a big DLC for the game, and to sweeten the deal, they are making it standalone. You get some exclusives if you DO own Second Son, but it’s not needed, which I think is an awesome perk.

Little Big Planet 3

What’s not to love about these games? They are the first coopetition games I ever got into with my friends, and we used to have a blast torturing each other throughout them. Nothing like waiting until your friend is about to make a big jump across a pit and grabbing their arm, weighting them down into the pit. Totally worth the shared death.

Bloodborne

Originally leaked as Project Beast, this game is a gothic, bloody, well, beast of a game. It seems to be a spiritual successor to Dark Souls, and it definitely looks like it will live up to its name.

Farcry 4

Announced a week or so back, this is a title I had been looking forward to seeing more of at E3, and wasn’t disappointed. Evidently, the most dangerous weapon you can use in the game? An elephant. Considering you also get access to a helicopter, that’s saying something. I am sold right there. They have also shown scenes of mini crossbows, sticky bombs, wingsuits, and more.
Again here Sony shows their commitment to staying in the lead in this console war by offering an awesome perk – you can invite your friends to play coop with you, even if they don’t own the game. Looks like we are getting our first taste of the powers behind Playstation Now…

Metal Gear Solid 5

I was a latecomer to the MGS saga, picking up 2 shortly before 4 came out, but it was love at first sight. I tore through 4 as fast as I could (taking into account the 2 hour movie you get to watch), and was skeptical when Kojima said it was his last. Well, it wasn’t, and we have seen the first part of MGS 5 already with Ground Zeroes, and here we get our first real taste of The Phantom Pain. From the sounds of those who got to see the first 20 minutes available at E3, this game does not disappoint. I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

GTA V

They are officially porting GTA V to the next gen consoles, as well as PC, and all reports show it will look better than ever.

Batman: Arkham Knight

You get to drive the Batmobile. If I knew nothing else about this game, that would be enough. But it’s also an Arkham game, which has me sold entirely. Looks like Scarecrow will be the big baddy – though I hope they don’t just cram the drug induced sections down our throats. They are amazing, but I don’t want a whole game of them. Sadly it has been pushed back to early next year, but again, I’d rather it come out polished.

Last of Us

Last of us is getting a makeover for the PS4. Game already looked amazing, but look at it now

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Last, but certainly not least, Uncharted is making its PS4 debut. Again, with this, the system is pretty much sold for me. I love the Uncharted games, they have so much attention to detail, so much pretty, and the game-play is just downright fun. All we really know so far is that it will be about a pirate treasure, and if the title has any implications, it may be our last Nathan Drake story? Can’t wait to see more

Roundup

Other games touched on that I have no real opinions on just yet include:
·         Entwined
·         Dead Island 2
·         Magicka 2
·         Grim Fandango
·         Broforce
·         Not a Hero
·         Hotline Miami 2
·         Let it Die
·         Abzu
·         No Man’s Sky

Wrap-up

That’s it for now, going to get a bit of Wildstar in before it gets too late. Another update on THAT coming after the E3 craziness dies down. One more day of conferences, will hopefully get all my write-ups done by Friday.
Sony packed a lot into their conference, and I look forward to seeing if it all lives up to the hype.  Stay tuned as the games release for updates!

Behind the Scenes....

Continuing on with June 9ths conferences, we have EA games, a powerhouse in the industry. There are a few games from this company that I am very much looking forward to, and some that though I am not interested in them, I respect how good they look. Overall, their presentation consisted more of behind the scenes, concept art, and very brief glimpses of early development games, which didn’t do much to satisfy fans. But it all comes down to the fact that we would rather see SOMETHING rather than just the every year sports titles and nothing else. Here’s what we did see…

Star Wars Battlefront

So DICE showed us some behind the scenes work from the new Star Wars Battlefront game. They are taking on the original trilogy, and they wanted to get everything right. They visited the Lucas Archives (I’m jealous, I won’t lie) and got to take pictures and scans of the original props, allowing them to make the most detailed models in game possible. They also visited the old sets of the movies, getting a feel for terrain chosen to represent these alien worlds and model their maps as closely as possible to the originals. From the few clips shown so far, they are doing a great job. Star Wars is easily tops my five favorite fantasy universes, leading the pack due to nostalgia among other great qualities. I’m psyched for DICE’s take on the game, and can’t wait to play!

Take a look here at the E3 trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yKv45X_OIo

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Origins was one of my favorite games, blending RPG elements into an action game beautifully, pacing the combat with the ability to pause and reexamine strategy. Dragon Age 2 fell far short in many gamers views, mine included. Bioware is back with Dragon Age: Inquisition and promises to make up for their previous title. Xbox has claimed the rights to first dibs on premiere content, which isn’t shocking considering the two companies history together. Among other things, DA:I promises advanced dragon fighting AI, so be ready for some challenging fights where the beasts can pounce around the battlefield, take flight, strafe you, and all sorts of other tricks to keep you on your toes.

Mass Effect

Another tease. Much like the Battlefront segment, the team showed a lot of behind the scenes chat for an upcoming Mass Effect title. Pretty much the only thing I took away from it was that it will be in a new sector of space, probably will not follow Shepard, and that I will buy it day one…

Sims 4

I love The Sims games. They are a blast, but rarely hold my in depth interest for long. I have always respected their attention to detail and concentration on fun gameplay. The new Sims, due out in September, looks to be no exception. With an advanced AI engine, they are bringing the Sims to live further, letting events that happen to them shape their mood as time progresses. Their emotions will play a key part in gameplay, and you get to shape their brains from the ground up, depicting exactly what your Sim will be like.

The Sims 4 will hit on September 2, preorder now!

Mirror’s Edge 2

Mirror’s Edge was one of the first games to bring Parkour to the gaming industry by, well, making a parkour game. 6 years later, DICE is bringing us back to the Mirror’s Edge world with a prettier game with even more attention to detail, both of which are no mean feat. The game isn’t due out for a few years, but we got a brief glimpse at the design process and their research into the movements of parkour.

Wrap-Up

Still have the full 3 days of the conference to cover, plus the Ubisoft and Sony conferences from June 9th. Keep your eyes here for updates as the week progresses, and I will work my fastest to get them up!
